The Business Manager visa allows individuals with sufficient financial resources (typically at least ¥5 million in capital) to either engage in the management of their own company (e.g. as a director / CEO), or take on administrative responsibilities within an existing business in Japan, such as acting as a plant manager. It provides an opportunity for long-term stay, in some cases, a pathway to permanent residency.

The Business Manager visa (also known as the Business Manager Status of Residence) typically grants an initial stay of 1 year. Extensions may be granted in increments of up to 5 years, subject to the ongoing viability and operation of the business in Japan.

Director's salary must have been genuinely paidFailing to pay the director’s salary may result in failure to meet the visa renewal requirements.
Sustainable Business Revenue to cover the director's salary and operational costs including taxesSustaining losses for two consecutive years may result in failure to meet the visa renewal requirements.
Physical Office and Business ActivityA dormant or shell company may result in failure to meet the visa renewal requirements.
Compliance with Laws and TaxesFailing to comply with the Laws and Taxes may result in visa revocation or failure to meet the visa renewal requirements.

Holders of the Business Manager visa may reside in Japan and engage in the operation and management of their designated enterprise. They may also sponsor family members, allowing spouses to apply for dependent visas (which may include permission to work, depending on the circumstances) and children to attend local schools on student or dependent visas.

This visa may serve as a route to permanent residency in Japan. After five years of continuous, lawful residence—demonstrating financial stability, good conduct, and fulfilling tax obligations—the applicant may be eligible to apply for permanent resident status.

We strongly recommend applicants to prepare a well-documented, realistic business plan, and to consider a higher level of capital investment to improve the chances of approval.
