What is the Dependent Visa?
The Dependent visa ("家族滞在" / "Kazoku Taizai" in Japanese) allows the spouse and/or child(ren) of a foreign national residing in Japan under a qualifying work or study visa to join them and reside in Japan. It is intended for family reunification and allows for a stable family life during the principal visa holder’s stay in Japan.
The Dependent visa does not automatically grant work rights. However, spouses may apply separately for "Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence" ("資格外活動許可" / "Shikakugai Katsudo Kyoka") through the Immigration Bureau. If approved, they may work part-time for up to 28 hours per week.
This permission is not granted by default and must be applied for after arriving in Japan. Even with permission, working beyond 28 hours per week is strictly prohibited.
Duration of Stay
The duration of the Dependent visa is typically matched to the length of stay of the sponsoring family member, and may be issued for 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years. Extensions are possible as long as the sponsoring person maintains a valid visa and continues to meet eligibility requirements.
