I’m planning to work in Japan
If you are considering building your career in Japan, it helps to understand the general process from finding a job to obtaining the correct visa and entering the country. Japan does not allow individuals to apply for a work visa on their own. The application must be made through the company that hires you.
Below is a simple outline of how the process typically works.
1. Finding Employment in Japan
To work legally in Japan, you must first secure a job offer from a Japanese employer.
Common routes include:
- Applying directly to Japanese companies
- Using international recruitment platforms
- Working with recruitment agencies specialising in cross-border hiring
Once you receive a job offer, your employer will determine the visa route that matches your role. Japan has several work-related residence statuses, each designed for different types of jobs (professional roles, skilled trades, labour-shortage sectors, etc.).
2. Visa Application Through Your Employer
After confirming the job description and your background, the employer — not the individual — initiates the visa process.
You will be asked to provide supporting documents such as:
- Academic certificates
- Proof of work experience
- A clear record of your employment and education history
Your employer (or their legal representative) will then prepare and submit the application to immigration on your behalf.
Our office supports employers throughout this stage, ensuring the correct visa category is selected and all requirements are met.
3. Receiving Permission and Arriving in Japan
Once immigration grants approval, you will receive the necessary documents to obtain your visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate.
After the visa is issued, you can travel to Japan, receive your residence card at the airport, and begin preparing for your first day at work.
